Mid-MN Legal Aid announces new dimension to tax law services
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (Minneapolis, Minn.) – With a grant from the Minnesota Department of Revenue, the Low Income Tax Clinic (LITC) of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid is pleased to announce in 2026 it will help struggling Minnesotans with state tax issues.
Legal Aid Tax Attorney Aisha Servaty says, historically, LITC work was limited to IRS cases with conditions. But this is no longer the case. “We’re proud to narrow the gap for low-income taxpayers needing state tax assistance. Our LITC will initially focus on cases in which clients are being audited when it comes to Minnesota tax credits (the Working Family Credit, Minnesota Child Tax Credit or the Minnesota Credit for Qualifying Older Children) or when the taxpayer needs assistance stopping collection activity that is causing significant economic hardship. Our clinic is also prepared to help and advocate for clients who receive MN Department of Revenue Notices.”
Additionally, the grant is supporting the units’ efforts to make taxpayers aware of those Minnesota tax credits. Servaty adds, “We’ll also help with questions of when and how to claim a dependent on a state tax return, how to claim previously unfiled tax credits, and what steps to take to trace an unreceived tax refund.”
The grant also supports expansion of LITC’s shareable materials in Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s online library. To learn more, contact Aisha Servaty, Director of the Tax Law Project, at aservaty@mylegalaid.org.
