Eligibility Guidelines

Anyone living in our service area who:

  • has a low income
  • is at least 60 years of age
  • has a disability
  • 20 central Minnesota counties — for low-income individuals
    • Benton, Big Stone, Chippewa, Chisago, Hennepin, Isanti, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Renville, Sherburne, Stearns, Swift, Todd, Wright, Yellow Medicine
  • 26 Minnesota counties — for seniors 60+
    • Anoka, Benton, Big Stone, Cass, Chippewa, Chisago, Crow Wing, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Pine, Renville, Sherburne, Stearns, Swift, Todd, Wadena, Wright, Yellow Medicine
  • Statewide — for disability-, tax-related cases or health care coverage

  4. Guidance: Legal Aid will advise you on next steps.

Cases We Handle

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid gives legal help to people in poverty and to people of any income level age 60 or older or living with disabilities. We provide free civil legal aid for:

  • Debt collection and unfair loans
  • Disability-related cases
  • Divorce when child custody is an issue
  • Domestic violence
  • Elder abuse
  • Housing discrimination and evictions
  • Immigration and citizenship
  • IRS tax issues

We do not offer legal help for criminal cases. If you are charged with a crime, you should ask for a public defender.
