Statement: Legal Aid lauds highest court’s decision on birthright citizenship
14th Amendment: “All persons born… in the United States… are citizens of the United States.”
STATEMENT (Minneapolis, MN) — Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, reaffirming birthright citizenship as an enshrined constitutional promise, is enthusiastically welcomed by Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid. Every day, we work with clients from around the world who see the United States as we wish to be seen — a beacon of freedom and opportunity for a better life. In turn, we get to be a better nation. Simply put, birthright citizenship is central to who we are as a country, providing all born here fundamental constitutional and democratic rights. At Legal Aid, standing for the Rule of Law as a pathway to equal justice for all, we endorse this clarion call to continue the fight for hope, particularly for our marginalized and vulnerable neighbors. Our deepest gratitude to the ACLU for challenging the executive order and to the justices who maintained the integrity of the constitution.
