Statement — Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid management and the MMLA Workers Union, together, are pleased to announce an agreement giving employees an across-the-board, 14.29%, salary increase. Retroactive to July 1 of this year, all MMLA employees will see this wage increase reflected in their next paycheck.

Respective parties at the bargaining table jointly agree tenor, and approach to negotiations, has been positive and collaborative. Historic investments by the Minnesota Legislature made salary increases possible.

“We acknowledge, we have more work to complete on a first contract,” said Executive Director Milo Mumgaard, “but what has been accomplished, so far, represents our commitment to ensuring employees feel they are respected and valued members of Legal Aid.”

“Like many working people, our members are struggling with stifling student debt and ballooning rent, health care and living expenses,” said Interim Union President Jonah Giese. “These raises will help alleviate those pressures. We look forward to continuing our productive negotiations and honoring the tremendous efforts of all MMLA staff.”

Salary negotiations, which began this fall, are the first for the organization and its union member staff which voted to unionize as AFSCME Council 5 in February.
