Northside Community Legal Clinic moves to Oak Park
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Minneapolis, Minn.) — For five years, Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid hung its shingle at the offices of the Harrison Neighborhood Association. This will change Thursday, Nov. 5, as the northside community legal clinic moves a mile away to the Oak Park Neighborhood Center, 1701 Oak Park Ave N, Minneapolis, MN 55411.
Legal Aid Attorney Patty Walton is leading justice efforts at the clinic, three years running, and though the location is changing, she says the same neighborhood residents can get legal help at Oak Park during the same clinic hours, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
“We enjoyed a wonderful partnership with the Harrison Neighborhood Association. There, we have been able to help residents stay in their homes as they faced threat of eviction, especially during Operation Metro Surge. We also helped clients recover apartment deposits and protected them from unjust wage garnishment. At Oak Park, we’ll continue delivering the same high level of legal services.”
Walton adds that clinic work in neighborhood hubs has been a guiding force in helping to close the generational wealth gap, particularly in communities of color. “I’ve met residents who’ve come in for a rake and after talking with them, they’ve gotten a Transfer on Death Deed for their home. TODDs are an affordable alternative to wills and costly probate, allowing homeowners to more easily pass on their homes to loved ones.
Legal Aid Clinic doors at Oak Park will open 10 a.m., Thursday Nov. 5. Neighborhood partners and community organizations are encouraged to spread the word by sharing our flyer.
