Statement: Legal Aid lauds highest court’s decision on birthright citizenship
14th Amendment: “All persons born… in the United States… are citizens of the United States.”
STATEMENT (Minneapolis, MN) — Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, reaffirming birthright citizenship as an enshrined constitutional promise, is enthusiastically welcomed by Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid. Every day, we work with clients from around the world who see the United States as we wish to be seen — a beacon of freedom and opportunity for a better life. In turn, we get to be a better nation. Simply put, birthright citizenship is central to who we are as a country, providing all born here fundamental constitutional and democratic rights. At Legal Aid, standing for the Rule of Law as a pathway to equal justice for all, we endorse this clarion call to continue the fight for hope, particularly for our marginalized and vulnerable neighbors.
