Landlords collected thousands of dollars in illegal “side payments” from low-income tenants

Meria Murray came to Legal Aid for help after a housing court referee informed her that it was illegal for the landlord to charge illegal side payments – payments of rent above what the tenant portion of rent is supposed to be under a section 8 contract.  She called Legal Aid for help.  We investigated and determined that filing a False Claims Act case against her landlord was the best course of action.  Once the complaint was filed in federal court the Assistant US Attorney’s office began investigating and found many other alleged incidents of illegal side payments were charged by the landlord.  The case was settled before trial.
